Game-day structure and philosophy

Each session blends guided activities with free play. For roughly the first half hour, teams work through fun soccer activities and skills; for the last half hour, a scrimmage coach leads a scrimmage. U6 through U10 sides carry community sponsor names and usually land in teams of about 12–18 players within the age band. U12 runs as a group training block with rotating scrimmage combinations rather than fixed rosters.

The league stresses player development, teamwork, socializing, and enjoyment—not scorekeeping, standings, or win-loss framing. Volunteer leaders sometimes add conditions such as a minimum number of passes before a shot to keep play fair and thoughtful. Families should plan on shin guards, a fully inflated ball marked with the player’s name, sneakers or soccer cleats (no front spikes like baseball cleats), and respectful behavior toward young referees and coaches.

Practices and schedules

U12 focuses on the Saturday block described above. For U6 through U10, expect about one additional practice per week, set by the team coach—often finalized at Opening Day. Coaches typically reach families shortly before Opening Day with field details; if no message arrives, plan to show up about 15 minutes before the listed game window and check in with on-site staff.

Spring 2026 league games are scheduled at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, 100 Elbel Court, Albany. Field rotation PDFs and maps are published for each season so parking and field assignments stay clear.

Registration, fees, and travel expectations

Signup runs through Active LeagueOne for Albany Youth Soccer (Club ID 8402). The posted fee model is $20 for one player per season and $30 total when two or more players in the same family register. Age-as-of dates change by season; the active cutoff appears on the LeagueOne welcome screen (for example, Spring 2026 required players to be 4.5 by June 13, 2026).

Scholarships, service, and community ties

Beyond weekly programming, AYS channels sponsorships and donations into Albany-area schools and activities—supporting events such as the Falcon 5K, Founders Day, and Winter Guard showcases. Between seasons the organization has collected used cleats for Cleats-for-Kenya style donation drives.

Annual scholarships go to former AYS players who compete on Albany High School sports teams, with applications handled through Albany High guidance and awards at the Senior Sports Banquet. Referees who serve AYS for at least three years can qualify for a dedicated referee scholarship, also distributed through the high school guidance office.
