About

Blackhills FC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit premier youth soccer club anchored in Thurston County and chartered through Thurston County Youth Soccer Association. It is the only Thurston County program that competes in Washington Youth Soccer’s Regional Club League (RCL), and the club can also place teams in the North Puget Sound League (NPSL) so each side can match its competitive level. Players come from Thurston County and nearby Lewis, Grays Harbor, Mason, and Pierce counties.

What the club offers

Travel teams train about two or three times a week for roughly ten months each year, with intermittent breaks the club treats as part of a balanced family life. The model is player-centered: coaches hold U.S. Soccer licenses, stay active in coaching education, and work inside SafeSport and risk-management requirements. Beyond team practices, families can use skills sessions for ball mastery, specialized goalkeeper training, makeup or extra touches with other club teams when coaches approve, and two written player evaluations per year. The club also runs events such as college information nights, a club picnic, auctions, jamborees, and community service projects. A separate player development track lets athletes who are not rostered after tryouts train alongside age-appropriate teams for a monthly fee, and the club collaborates with partner organizations when families need a different competitive fit.

Seasons, tryouts, and league play

Boys U10 through U15 and girls U10 through U19 hold tryouts in April and May. Boys U16 through U19 try out in February because those teams pause during the Washington high school spring season. Families should register before tryouts when possible; if online signup is not available, a guardian can complete paperwork at check-in. Players check in, receive a numbered tryout jersey, and move through small-sided and full-sided games while multiple coaches evaluate. Returning players receive no automatic preference, and the club asks returners not to wear Blackhills apparel at tryouts. Offers are communicated by phone within about three days of the final tryout session. Anyone who must miss the main window can arrange roughly two weeks of training evaluations by contacting the technical director.

Younger travel groups (U9–U14) play a fall season from the weekend after Labor Day through mid-December and a spring segment that usually begins in January and runs into mid-March. U15–U19 teams follow longer single-season calendars that respect high-school soccer breaks. Teams enter two to four tournaments annually depending on age, and U12–U19 state-cup style postseason play is built into the bundled player fee, while younger groups only add that tournament if families opt in. Roughly half of league matches are hosted around Thurston County, with most away trips staying along the I-5 corridor and only occasional longer drives.

Fees, uniforms, and financial aid

The board sets an all-inclusive annual player fee before each tryout cycle; age-band dollar totals refresh every season, so ask the registrar for the figure that applies to your player. The full matrix for a given year may not be fixed until shortly before tryouts—always confirm the current amounts with the registrar before accepting a roster spot. That bundle covers Washington Youth Soccer registration, club administration, field rental, referees, the technical director, head and assistant coaches, two to four tournaments for most teams (including Presidents Cup or Washington State Championship pathways where the age group participates), and year-round team training with flexibility to join other approved club sessions when players need extra reps. Uniform kits are purchased separately. After a family accepts an invitation, they may pay in one charge or spread the balance across twelve monthly credit-card installments using Visa, Mastercard, or Discover.

Need-based financial aid is available each year; awards depend on household income, family size, special circumstances, and fundraising-driven budgets, and aid never covers uniforms. Application steps and deadlines change season to season, so families should request the current form and timeline from the financial aid mailbox rather than relying on older application packets.

Frequently asked questions

What ages and program levels does Blackhills FC offer?Blackhills FC fields premier-level travel teams in Washington Youth Soccer’s Regional Club League and can slot teams into the North Puget Sound League when a different competitive band fits better. Programming is organized by birth-year groups labeled U9, U10, and up, following Washington Youth Soccer age rules. Younger travel players experience fall and spring league segments, while high-school age boys and girls follow adjusted calendars that pause during school soccer. Athletes who are not rostered after tryouts may join the monthly player development training option while the staff helps find the right level elsewhere if needed.

Where does Blackhills FC train and play home games?Teams center training at the Capital Soccer Fields complex at 2832 93rd Avenue SW, Olympia, WA 98512, which keeps most practices on one campus for easier carpooling. About half of league matches are hosted in the Thurston County area, with away fixtures typically along the I-5 corridor and only occasional longer trips. General mail still goes to P.O. Box 7293, Olympia, WA 98507.

When are tryouts and how does registration work?Boys U10 through U15 and girls U10 through U19 try out in April and May, while boys U16 through U19 try out in February so those rosters are set before the high school spring season. Families should complete online registration ahead of time when possible; guardians can also finish paperwork at tryout check-in. Players receive numbered bibs, participate in small-sided and full-sided games, and hear results by phone within about three days of the final session. Missing the main tryout window does not automatically end the process—contact the technical director to schedule roughly two weeks of training-based evaluation.

What is included in the player fee and how can families pay?The all-inclusive annual fee bundles Washington Youth Soccer registration, club administration, field rental, referees, technical director support, licensed coaching staff, two to four tournaments per year for most teams (including Presidents Cup or Washington State Championship pathways when the age group participates), and year-round team training with options to join other approved club sessions for extra touches. Uniforms are always extra. After accepting a roster invitation, families may pay the full balance at once or spread it across twelve monthly credit-card charges using Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Ask the registrar for the exact dollar amount that applies to your player’s age group for the season you are entering, especially when the club is still finalizing the seasonal fee matrix.

Does Blackhills FC offer financial aid?Yes. The club awards need-based aid so talented, committed players are not blocked solely by cost. Decisions weigh household income, family size, and exceptional circumstances against a budget funded largely through fundraising, and aid does not cover uniforms. Application steps and deadlines change each year, so email financialaid@blackhillsfc.org for the current form, mailing instructions, and committee timeline.

What is the club’s mission and coaching philosophy? The mission is to deliver a competitive, player-centered experience through a holistic, collaborative environment that teaches kids how to compete while growing inside a team. Core values emphasize fun, respect, safety, excellence, and teamwork. On the field the club wants possession-based progress, organized pressing high up the pitch, quick counterattacks or controlled buildup after turnovers, and immediate defensive reactions when the ball is lost. Coaches aim to be positive, organized, adaptable, and focused on helping each athlete take responsibility for development.

How can families contact Blackhills FC leaders?Email registrar@blackhillsfc.org for registration questions, programs@blackhillsfc.org for programming, TDKate@blackhillsfc.org for technical director and tryout issues, financialaid@blackhillsfc.org for aid applications, and president@blackhillsfc.org for board-level topics. Use P.O. Box 7293, Olympia, WA 98507 for postal mail and plan on 2832 93rd Avenue SW, Olympia, WA 98512 for field visits.
