About

Columbia Soccer Association (CSA) is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that has grown since the 1980s into one of the larger community soccer providers in the Columbia, Tennessee area. CSA now serves on the order of 800–900 recreational players each season alongside a competitive travel program, an adult league, mentor-led youngest-age programming, supplemental training, tournaments, and camps. The club affiliates with the Tennessee State Soccer Association (TSSA) and follows the August 1–July 31 soccer year common across US Youth Soccer.

What the club offers

Recreational soccer spans roughly U4 through U18, with divisions built from birth year using the standard US Youth Soccer birth-year matrix. The Tiny Toes track introduces the youngest players (about 04U) to basic ball skills and movement through Saturday sessions at Ridley Park, led by CSA mentors rather than a traditional league schedule. Older recreational teams emphasize fun and participation: players are expected to play at least half of each game, scores are not emphasized at the recreational level, and teams stay as balanced as practical. Families who want a higher level can pursue the competitive program after tryouts.

The competitive program is a travel model: teams train more often, face other clubs, and may travel out of county or state for league and tournament play. Tryouts are free and usually run in May and June; registration is a two-step process through the club’s online system (create or log into an account, then choose competitive tryout registration for the player). After tryouts, Tennessee’s binding-date rules apply for competitive commitment, separate from any financial agreement families make with the club. Team-level costs after roster acceptance vary with schedule, tournaments, hotels, and other team decisions.

CSA also runs an adult league, mentor support for the youngest divisions, training blocks, tournaments, and seasonal camps alongside the core youth tracks.

Development philosophy and playing experience

Recreational soccer is built around enjoyment, sportsmanship, and steady skill growth. Volunteer parent coaches lead most recreational teams once they complete risk-management training (background check, concussion, cardiac, and SafeSport-style requirements). U4–U6 groups often meet only on Saturdays with mentors running activities during the assigned window, while older teams add weekday practices on days coaches select. Competitive soccer expects more training nights, earned playing time based on readiness and commitment, and paid coaching staff rather than parent volunteers on the touchline during games.

Registration, seasons, and typical fees

Spring outdoor recreational registration has historically opened around January for March–May play; fall registration has typically opened around July for September–November seasons. Each season lasts about eight weeks. Recent spring outdoor seasons have charged about $120 per player including the game uniform kit, with a small late fee after the registration cutoff. Registration is online only through the club portal; families should use password recovery instead of creating duplicate accounts so player history stays intact.

Competitive families should plan for club operating fees that cover coaching, fields, training, and program overhead, plus variable team expenses. Before accepting a competitive roster spot, families review a one-year commitment tied to the soccer year and understand that release through TSSA does not erase prior financial obligations to the team or club.

Fields and practice locations

Game sites include Cook Soccer Park and Ridley Park, and families receive field-status updates when weather or closures affect play. Recreational practices are often assigned around Dr. Hunter’s practice fields near Graymere Church of Christ, though coaches confirm exact days and times with their teams.

Frequently asked questions

What ages and program levels does Columbia Soccer Association offer?CSA runs Tiny Toes for the youngest players (about 04U), recreational soccer from roughly U4 through U18, a competitive travel program after tryouts, an adult league, mentor-led Saturday sessions for the youngest rec teams, plus training, tournaments, and camps. Older recreational players who want more challenge move into the competitive pathway.

Where does Columbia Soccer Association play and practice?Games use Cook Soccer Park and Ridley Park, with field-status notices maintained for families. Recreational practices are often scheduled around Dr. Hunter’s practice fields near Graymere Church of Christ. Competitive teams may train and play at additional venues depending on age group and season.

When are competitive tryouts and how does registration work?Open competitive tryouts are usually held in May and June and are free. Families register online in two steps: sign up for tryouts in the club portal, then attend both tryout sessions for the player’s age group. If that window has passed, email vpcompetitive@columbiasoccer.org about an individual tryout. Tennessee’s competitive binding rules apply after commitment, alongside any separate financial agreement with the club.

What does recreational soccer cost and what is included?Recent spring outdoor recreational seasons have been offered at about $120 per player including a jersey, shorts, and socks, with a modest late fee after the registration deadline. Families still supply shin guards, cleats or closed-toe shoes, and an age-appropriate ball (size 3 for roughly U4–U8, size 4 for roughly U9–U12, size 5 for roughly U13–U18).

How much does competitive soccer cost?Club competitive fees cover operating costs such as training, fields, coaching, and program administration. After a player joins a team, additional team dues vary with how many games and tournaments the group plays, travel, hotels, and other shared expenses. Families should expect a higher total investment and time commitment than in recreational soccer.

Who can register and when do seasons run?Registration is open to families in Maury County and surrounding counties, not only inside Columbia city limits. The soccer year runs August 1 through July 31. Spring outdoor play typically spans about eight weeks from March into May with registration often opening in January; fall outdoor play similarly runs about eight weeks from September into November with registration often opening in July.

How can families contact Columbia Soccer Association?Email admin@columbiasoccer.org for general questions, registrar@columbiasoccer.org for registration and schedules, and vpcompetitive@columbiasoccer.org for competitive travel and tryouts. The mailing address is 1116 West 7th Street PMB 248, Columbia, Tennessee 38401.
