About

Anacortes Parks & Recreation (APRD) youth soccer is a recreational program for boys and girls. Rules and field sizes are scaled so younger players get more touches and clearer learning progressions, while older brackets move toward full-sided play. The department balances skill work, teamwork, and healthy activity so families get a supportive neighborhood sports experience tied to city recreation.

City league and county league

The in-house city league is coordinated by APRD: practices and games stay in Anacortes. A separate county league still anchors practices and home matches in Anacortes but adds away games in other Skagit Valley communities such as Burlington, Sedro-Woolley, the Mount Vernon and Conway area, La Conner, and sometimes San Juan Island. County teams participate under Skagit Valley Youth Soccer Association and Washington Youth Soccer, with Saturday games and occasional Sunday dates; doubleheaders can occur. Both tracks stress sportsmanship, balanced playing time, and development. City registration runs through the APRD Sportsites player portal; county registration runs through the SkVYSA Bluesombrero registration flow for the Anacortes county teams. A team shirt or jersey top is bundled into the registration fee in each track, while families supply shorts, shin guards, socks, and soccer cleats (molded soccer cleats only—baseball or football cleats are not allowed).

Seasons, registration, and team formation

Fall league registration opens in late April. Practices begin in late August, and games typically start the Saturday after Labor Day in September. Registrations after the registration deadline may incur a late fee. APRD staff form rosters by age group and aim for evenly matched teams.

Age groups and how play is formatted

Younger divisions through about under-12 use smaller fields and fewer players on the field so the game stays manageable and active. Starting at under-13, teams move to full-size fields with eleven players per side. Division labels span from introductory under-6 play through county brackets that include combined under-13 and under-14 age bands; exact birth-year cutoffs follow a September 1 eligibility date and are updated each soccer year with registration. For detailed rule questions, families can call the recreation office at (360) 293-1918.

Coaches, referees, and more competitive soccer

Volunteer coaches receive guidance and resources from APRD. Prospective coaches complete a volunteer application and background screening. City-league coaching questions can go to eliasm@anacorteswa.gov; county-league coaching questions can go to dustins@anacortewa.gov. Certified referees are needed for under-11 and older matches; Skagit area certification courses are available through skagitrefs.org, and center referees are compensated on the order of about fifty dollars per game. Athletes who outgrow recreational intensity often explore Northwest United FC select programming in the Skagit Valley; families review tryout schedules and club fees at nwunited.org.
