About

Sporting Wichita Academy is the official Sporting Kansas City Academy affiliate serving Wichita and the surrounding region. The club traces its roots to Wichita Rojos Soccer Club, founded in 2002, and became Sporting KC’s eleventh Midwest academy affiliate in 2014. Boys and girls from early childhood through U19 can follow age-appropriate pathways from introductory Minis sessions through competitive league play aligned with Sporting KC methodology.

Programs and competitive pathways

Sporting Minis introduces boys and girls ages 3 through 5 to fundamentals at Stryker Sports Complex, with parent participation encouraged and professionally licensed coaches leading non-competitive, skill-building sessions across fall, winter, spring, and summer cycles. Junior Academy serves U5 through U8 (birth years 2018–2021) with year-round outdoor and futsal training, league games at Stryker Sports Complex, and curriculum built from the youngest ages upward.

Older boys can compete in the Sporting Development League (SDL) at U11 and U12, the National Academy League (NAL) from U13 through U19 with league games in Kansas City, and MLS NEXT Academy Division (AD) for U13–U19 boys—including high-school eligibility within MLS NEXT rules. Girls U13 through U19 can join Development Player League (DPL) teams that bridge club soccer toward Girls Academy levels, with travel required at that tier. The club also supports TOP Soccer, camps and clinics, goalkeeper training, futsal programs, and a college advisory track.

Development philosophy

Sporting Wichita emphasizes a development-first environment: technical skill, decision-making, confidence on the ball, physical literacy, character, leadership, and sportsmanship over short-term standings—especially at younger ages. Training follows Sporting KC methodology with age-appropriate progressions, modified field sizes for more touches, and core values of commitment, leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship woven through programming. Multi-sport participation is supported, particularly for younger players.

Training locations and schedule

Junior Academy players train with weekly turf sessions and mandatory futsal at Sports Forum during fall and spring, with eight league games at Stryker Sports Complex (2999 N. Greenwich Rd., Wichita). Minis sessions also use Stryker fields; winter indoor locations vary by season. Practice schedules depend on age group, field availability, and coach assignments—families confirm current times through team communication after enrollment.

Tryouts, registration, and fees

2026–2027 tryouts are open for new and returning families. Registration and team communication run through PlayMetrics, including club-wide emails and team chat groups. Junior Academy annual fees are $350 for U5/U6 and $500 for U7/U8, covering league fees, coaching education, facility use, player insurance, and Sporting KC membership costs; payment plans and fundraising are available. Competitive-tier fees for 2026–2027 are announced seasonally. Uniforms for Junior Academy include a required $15 practice shirt; game kits are ordered through the club’s Soccer.com partnership when links are distributed.
