About

West Austin Youth Association (WAYA) is a privately funded nonprofit founded in 1980 to provide recreational and educational opportunities for Austin-area youth. Across more than thirty sports and activities each year, WAYA serves a large multi-sport community; its soccer program focuses on developmental, neighborhood-friendly play for children from PreK through sixth grade in fall and spring seasons.

Programs and levels

Soccer divisions are organized by school grade. Coed Developmental serves PreK players who must be four years old, with teams capped at twelve players. Coed Peewee is for kindergarten, also twelve-player rosters. From first grade onward, boys and girls play in separate divisions: Minors (first and second grade), Juniors (third and fourth), and Seniors (fifth and sixth), generally capped at twelve per team. Boys third and fourth grade use a three-on-three format on a smaller field with six-player rosters. Peewee, Minor, Junior, and Senior teams hold one practice and one game per week; Developmental teams do not hold a weekday practice and instead take a short practice window immediately before Saturday games. Players register for the grade level they are enrolled in for the current school year; moving up an age band for skill reasons requires approval from the athletic director.

Fields, seasons, and weekly rhythm

Home soccer activity rotates between Brumley Field at 1314 Exposition Boulevard and the Chalmers and McEachern fields at 1200 West Cesar Chavez in downtown Austin. Fall seasons typically run Saturday games from early September into mid-October; spring seasons run Saturday mornings and afternoons from late March into mid-May, with a scheduled break when holidays fall on game weekends. Practice days and times for Peewee through Senior teams are set by the volunteer head coach within Sunday-through-Friday windows communicated each season, and practices use the same field complexes as league play.

Registration, membership, fees, and aid

Families who hold a current WAYA membership receive reduced soccer registration rates compared with non-member pricing; completing membership registration and using the membership confirmation code during league signup unlocks the member price tier. Typical seasonal registration has an early-bird window and a regular deadline that closes earlier if a division fills. Recent cycles have used member rates of one hundred eighty-five dollars during early bird and two hundred ten dollars at regular pricing, and non-member rates of two hundred ninety-five dollars early bird and three hundred twenty dollars regular, per player. Volunteer head coaches receive an additional thirty-dollar registration discount. Full refunds are available for cancellation requests received before the final registration deadline for that season; after that date, refunds need athletic director approval and may retain a fifty-dollar processing fee, with prorated handling if a season ends early. Need-based assistance is available through an online financial aid request that asks for proof of income such as a tax return; questions go to the athletic director.

Clinics, teams, coaching, and sideline expectations

Each registration includes a weekly skills clinic led by professional coaches; WAYA partners with Avila Soccer for these complimentary sessions, with age-band time blocks and ball-size guidance provided each season. Pre-formed teams may register as a group: every player still enrolls individually, and the coach emails a full roster to the assistant athletic director. Coach, player, and school pairing requests are considered at team formation but are not guaranteed. Head coaches must complete a background check and preseason paperwork and attend a meeting with the athletic director before games begin. For developmental and peewee groups, a parent or guardian must remain on site during clinics and activities—drop-offs are not allowed.

Mission, culture, and how to reach WAYA

WAYA’s mission is to offer activities in a fun, safe community setting so children can reach their full potential, with a vision of premier youth development programs and welcoming facilities across Austin. Soccer operates under the “Honor the Game” culture: emphasis on integrity, sportsmanship, and positive coaching rather than a win-at-all-cost approach, drawing on Double-Goal Coach and Positive Coaching Alliance ideas so players learn skills and life lessons together. The main facility is at 1314 Exposition Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78703, with facility hours seven days a week. General questions go to the office phone or info@waya.org; division questions, play-up requests, financial aid, and refund exceptions route through the athletic director at lramirez@waya.org, and pre-formed team rosters go to the assistant athletic director at kmartinez@waya.org.

Frequently asked questions

What ages and soccer levels does WAYA offer?WAYA soccer is for PreK through sixth grade. Coed Developmental requires players to be four years old; Peewee is kindergarten. Boys and girls divisions run from first through sixth grade, with third and fourth grade boys using a three-on-three format. Where does WAYA soccer train and play?Games and practices use Brumley Field at 1314 Exposition Boulevard and the Chalmers and McEachern fields at 1200 West Cesar Chavez in downtown Austin. Some younger developmental games may also use Bechtol-Harper Field by YMCA Town Lake in addition to Brumley, depending on the season schedule.

When does the soccer season run and how does registration timing work?Soccer operates in fall and spring. Fall Saturday play has recently started in early September and finished in mid-October; spring Saturday play has recently begun in late March and ended in mid-May, skipping a weekend when a major holiday falls on game day. Each season opens registration with an early-bird deadline and a regular deadline that can close sooner if a division fills. If registration shows closed for a division, families can join the waitlist when WAYA offers one for that cycle.

What does soccer registration cost for members and non-members?Member families pay lower league registration than non-members after completing a current WAYA membership and entering the membership confirmation code at signup. Recent seasons have charged members one hundred eighty-five dollars during early bird and two hundred ten dollars at regular pricing, and non-members two hundred ninety-five dollars early bird and three hundred twenty dollars regular, per player. Volunteer head coaches receive an extra thirty-dollar discount on their child’s registration.

Are skills training or financial help available?Weekly professional-led skills clinics through Avila Soccer are included with registration at no extra charge, with session times and ball sizes communicated for each age band. Families who need fee assistance submit the online financial aid request with proof of income such as a tax return and can email the athletic director with questions.

What is WAYA’s approach to coaching and sportsmanship?WAYA promotes an Honor the Game culture that rejects win-at-all-cost pressure. Coaches are supported as Double-Goal Coaches who care about both competitive play and life lessons, using ideas aligned with the Positive Coaching Alliance so every athlete feels part of the team, has fun, and improves skills in a respectful environment.
