About

Whatcom FC Rangers (WFC Rangers) is Whatcom County’s premier competitive youth soccer club, rooted in Bellingham and one of Washington’s longest-standing programs. With more than four decades of tradition, the organization fields roughly 36 boys’ and girls’ teams and more than 500 players who train and compete from local fields through statewide premier leagues.

Programs and competitive pathway

The club organizes premier travel teams for boys and girls from U9 through U19, using US Youth Soccer age brackets with an August 1–July 31 cutoff (updated for the 2026/27 season). Teams are grouped by gender, then age, then ability—with up to three squads per age labeled Gold, Blue, and White so players compete alongside peers at a similar level. U9 and U10 sides average about 10 players and play 7v7; U11 and U12 average about 14 and play 9v9; older age groups carry larger rosters on full-size formats.

Most Rangers teams compete in Washington’s Regional Club League (RCL) against the state’s top premier clubs; the club ranks among the top ten RCL organizations statewide. Some teams also play in the North Puget Sound League (NPSL) to limit travel within north Puget Sound. Summer tournament schedules are set by technical staff and head coaches to match each team’s competitive level.

Families not ready for full premier commitment can use Jr Rangers skills camps—short seasonal training blocks led by WFC coaches for players born 2014–2019 (and open to non-members). Camps emphasize ball mastery, 1v1 attacking, passing and receiving, defending fundamentals, and small-group team concepts as a bridge toward premier tryouts.

Tryouts and team placement

Annual tryouts follow Washington Youth Soccer scheduling—typically February for boys’ high school ages and April–May for other groups, with two tryout days per age. Players must attend at least one session; both days are strongly recommended. Directors and Rangers coaches evaluate athletes and place each player where they can succeed; play-up tryouts require staff invitation. For 2026/27, eligible birth years run from 2019 through August 1, 2007, aligned with the new USYS cutoff dates.

The club hosts a New Parent Info Night each spring (April 23 in 2026 at the Bellingham School District office) for families exploring premier soccer, fees, and the season calendar.

Development, college, and facilities

Core values emphasize purpose-driven teamwork, passion for the game, and competitive challenge that builds confidence on and off the field. Paid head and assistant coaches are recruited and assigned by the Executive Director, with stipends structured to keep Rangers among the more affordable RCL clubs in Washington.

High school–age players can access college seminars, advisor support, recruiting checklists, and tools such as College Fit Finder to plan academic and athletic next steps. Home training and matches center on Phillips 66 Soccer Park at 5238 Northwest Drive, Bellingham.

Membership costs and support

Annual membership fees are simplified and all-inclusive for club operations: U9–U10 at $1,745 and U11–U19 at $1,945 per year. That membership covers tournament registrations, training fields and lights, home game field rentals, referees, coach stipends, player registration, and administrative costs—separate from uniform and travel expenses. Deposit and payment plan options are available, and scholarships are awarded to qualifying families (applications due June 10 following tryouts; awards depend on applicants and available funds and do not cover travel). The club reports providing scholarships to every qualifying family in recent seasons.
